In 2004, he won the Democratic nomination for the US Senate from Illinois. His keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in July 2004 — a speech about national unity across partisan and racial lines — brought him to national prominence overnight. He won re-election in 2012, defeating Mitt Romney with 332 electoral votes. He left office on 20 January 2017.
