Tony Hawk

Anthony Frank Hawk was born on May 12, 1968, in Carlsbad, California. He took up skateboarding at age nine, encouraged by his older brother. By his early teens, he was competing in professional contests and became one of the dominant figures in the vert skateboarding discipline throughout the 1980s.

Hawk turned professional at age 14 and was ranked as the world's top professional skateboarder for much of the 1980s. He competed in the National Skateboarding Association circuit and won numerous titles during this period. He rode for Powell-Peralta, one of the most prominent skateboard companies of the era, and was part of the influential Bones Brigade team.

As skateboarding's popularity declined in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hawk founded his own skateboard company, Birdhouse, in 1992. He continued competing and at the 1999 X Games Best Trick event, he became the first person to successfully complete a 900-degree aerial rotation (two and a half full spins) in a competitive setting. The feat was widely covered by media and became a landmark moment for the sport.

In 1999, Activision released Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, a video game that became a massive commercial success and introduced skateboarding culture to a broad new audience worldwide. The franchise expanded to multiple sequels and became one of the best-selling sports video game series in history.

Hawk has been active in skateboarding advocacy through the Tony Hawk Foundation (later renamed The Skatepark Project), which has helped fund the construction of public skateparks in underserved communities across the United States. He is widely credited with elevating the sport's profile internationally.
