Dennis Rodman

Dennis Keith Rodman was born on 13 May 1961 in Trenton, New Jersey, and grew up in Dallas, Texas. He came to basketball relatively late, growing several inches after high school and developing through junior college and a small university before entering the NBA, an unusual path for a player who would become a multiple champion.

He first achieved success with the Detroit Pistons, part of the physical, defensively minded teams known as the "Bad Boys" that won consecutive championships in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He later joined the Chicago Bulls, where, alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, he won three further championships in the second half of the 1990s, taking his total to five.

He became one of the greatest rebounders the game has produced, leading the league in rebounding for a long succession of seasons despite not being among its tallest players, through positioning, anticipation, and relentless effort. He was repeatedly recognised as one of the league's outstanding defenders.

Off the court he became known for a flamboyant and provocative public persona, including frequently changing hair colours, tattoos, and a high-profile, unconventional lifestyle that made him one of the most recognisable figures in sport. In later years he drew international attention for visits to North Korea and a personal association with its leader.

Rodman is remembered as one of the most distinctive players in NBA history, a specialist whose defensive and rebounding contributions were central to championship teams and whose personality extended his fame well beyond basketball.
